Coaching, consulting, therapy – in everyday language these terms are often mixed up. People get “coached” on time management, “consult” someone about a career decision and go “to therapy” when things get emotionally difficult. The boundaries seem fluid, but they are not. Knowing the difference helps you find the service that really fits your concern more quickly.
Coaching: support along your own path
Coaching is a goal-oriented process that is usually limited in time. A coach does not primarily provide ready-made answers, but uses targeted questions and methods to help you develop your own solutions. The focus is on the future: on goals, options for action and next steps. Typical topics are leadership development, a career change or dealing with new roles.
Worth knowing: in Germany, “coach” is not a protected professional title. Anyone may call themselves a coach, regardless of training or qualifications. It is therefore worth looking at a coach’s professional background – for example a degree in psychology as the basis for a sound understanding of human experience and behaviour.
Consulting: expertise for a specific question
Consulting relies more heavily on subject-matter expertise. The consultant contributes knowledge, methods and a professional assessment so that a specific question can be answered on a sound basis or a decision can be well prepared. In work and organizational psychology, this ranges from individual career assessment and aptitude assessment to advising companies, for example on working conditions, collaboration or workplace reintegration management (BEM).
In practice, coaching and consulting often overlap. The difference lies mainly in the role: in coaching, guiding the process comes first; in consulting, professional expertise.
Therapy: treating mental illness
The decisive difference from therapy lies in what the work is about. Coaching and consulting are aimed at people who want to work on a professional or personal concern. Psychotherapy, by contrast, serves to diagnose and treat mental illness. It is a form of healthcare and is regulated by law: only people with the appropriate authorization may practise it, such as licensed psychotherapists or doctors with the relevant qualification. Sound coaching and consulting respect this boundary. If there are signs of strain that needs treatment, they refer people to medical or psychotherapeutic professionals instead of blurring the line.
